Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router Connection Problem
(too old to reply)

I recently purchased a Sony Vaio 2.68 GHz system and a Netgear WGR614
Wireless Router to connect to my existing SBC Yahoo DSL Alcatel Speed
Touch Home Router. I plan to connect another older computer to the
router so the 2 computers can share use of the internet. The Sony
Vaio shows a network connection to a Local Area Network (enablesd)
through a Realtek RTL8139/810X and a 1394 Connection (enabled) through
a 1394 Net Adapter. The router light shows power, connection to the
computer (#4 connection), and the internet light is lit (indicating a
link has been established to the modem according to the Netgear
installation guide). I was able to type in 192.168.0.1 in the address
field of IE and connect to the router. The smart wizard could not
detect the internet connection and I was not able to connect after
manually entering configuration settings for my ISP. I have contacted
Technical support with both Netgear and SBC on 2 different occasions
each without coming up with a solution. Netgear first had me return
the router but I had not better luck with the replacement. They then
told me that the router must not be compatible with the modem and that
I needed to have my ISP replace the modem. The ISP was even less
helpful in only stating their obligation was to connect the computer
to the modem and nothing more (I initially had set up a broadband
connection directly to the modem and determined I could connect
directly without going through the router. SBC did tell me there was
no known compatibility issues between the router and the modem. I
would appreciate it if someone could take me step by step through the
correct network configuration. If it is felt that it is not a network
configuration problem, any other suggestions would be most
appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

Did you supply the FULL userid (i.e. ***@pacbell.net)?
Other than the userid and password, what other configuration settings did you make?

Hi Joe, I use the full userid. Setup for Netgear asks if login is
required and I answer yes. It does not list SBC Yahoo as an ISP
option so I enter "Other". I then enter my login and password for SBC
Yahoo. I leave the Service Name blank and check DNS address: Get
automatically.

Paul,
Turn off the modem, and start the configuration Wizard again (with the modem left off).
At the point that the Wizard asks "Do You Want System To Detect Connection Type?", choose YES, Then turn the modem on.
If this fails, reset the router back to the factory defaults, and try again.

From the WGR614 manual:

To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the administration password or IP address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.
1.Press and hold the Default Reset button until the Test LED turns on (about 10 seconds).
2.Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, no luck with any of them.
It was also suggested to me that I try a crossover cable but that
didn't help either. I brought the router into my office and had my
company's network administrator hook it up between a computer and a
modem. He was able to communicate with the modem through the router.
Yet, the SBC Yahoo DSL technician stated there is no compatibility
issues between the Alcatel modem and the Netgear router. However, the
lights on the modem don't even flicker when I try to communicate. The
modem works fine when I connect directly to the computer (which I am
doing now on my old computer). I have also made a successful direct
connection with the modem through the new computer through a broadband
connection. Do you have any other suggestions I might try. I
appreciate it.

Is the modem "just a modem" or is it also a router? If it's a router, you've got two pieces odf equipment trying to do the same thing, and "stepping on each other". If that's the case, you'll need to either reconfigure your Alcatel to just act as a modem, and NOT as a router, or connect the Netgear as a SWITCH ONLY. You'll need to contact the vendors to find out how to do this. Thats all the ideas I've got.

I contacted SBC Yahoo and got my normal referral to another
department. I will follow up with them on whether or not the modem is
also a router. I also strongly suggested a modem replacement and
possible visit by a technician (wish me luck). If that doesn't work,
I may stongly consider going with roadrunner cable - I've heard its a
faster connection anyway but have put it off in the past because I
don't like changing my e-mail address. Anyway, thanks for you efforts
to resolve my problem.
