Hello
Recently my roomate and I were able to purchase DSL high speed
internet through Qwest Telephone. They sent us an Actiontec 1524
wireless ready dsl gateway. We're not using the wireless stuff, but
just want to share the internet (on two computers). One of the chat
programs I use (AIM) needs to "have port forwarding enabled" for files
to be sent. I followed the instructions in the manual for port
forwarding but it's not working. I called Qwest and they said they
didn't know why it wasn't working. Actiontec wants to charge me $30
to get help. Can someone please help me? A friend at school
suggested DMZ mode or something but said it is dangerous because my
computer wouldn't be protected. I tried DMZ on for my computer and it
didn't change anything. What do I do? I'm using Windows 2000
Professional, Gateway connected with ethernet and using NAT. One
person at qwest said it is possible to use the internet with NAT
turned off and share the internet at my apartment? How do I do that?
I got lost when it asked about Static Route information. Thanks.

Port 5190 is the Aim port for xfer I believe. You are forwarding the
correct port? In addition, you should be using one of the router's static
IP and not a DHCP IP for the machine.

Secondly, if you have a host based FW on the machine , you will need to set
rules to open the 5190 port. If you don't have a host based FW on the
machine, then you'll need one to protect the forwarded port.

In the AIM window, there is a stylized picture of a wrench, labeled
Prefs. Click that and go down to File Sharing and select that. Down
toward the bottom there is a box that says Port Number. Pick some
number like 4000 and enter that. Go to File Transfer and there also
is a a box that says Port Number. The same number should already be
there. Now go to the Actiontec Advanced setup and select Port
Forwarding. In the port boxes type 4000 and make sure TCP is
displayed in the TCP/UDP/GRE dropdown. In the IP address box type the
IP address of your computer. You should have a IP address you assign
yourself. To do that, on the Desktop right click My Network Places,
select Properties, find Local Area Connection, right click that,
select Properties, find the TCP/IP listing, highlight that and click
the Properties button, select Use the following IP address, in IP
address type 192.168.0.2, click in the Subnet Mask area and
255.255.255.0 should appear there (if not type that in), in the
Default Gateway area, type 192.168.0.1, select Use the following DNS
server addresses, type 192.168.0.1 in the Preferred DNS server entry,
click OK, OK, and make sure that in the port forwarding setup on the
Actiontec the IP address that gets port 4000 is 192.168.0.2. That is
a Static IP address. Do not turn off NAT on the Actiontec.
